Creating a service

The four shapes of service, and the wizard that sets one up.

A service is the thing your customer chooses and pays for. Creating one starts with a single question, and the rest of the setup follows from your answer.

Go to Settings, then Services, and add a new one.

The four shapes

You will be asked what kind of thing this is. There are four, and they cover most businesses:

We go to the customer. Jobs at the customer's address: plumbing, cleaning, mowing, pest control. The booking carries an address, the schedule accounts for driving, and coverage is checked against your territories.

They book a person. Appointments on a diary at your place: consults, salon visits, treatments. The booking is a slot with a named person against it.

They hire a space or item. A court, room, vehicle or piece of equipment booked in blocks of time. The booking is a window with a start and an end rather than a single appointment.

They join a class. Scheduled sessions with seats: yoga, workshops, courses. The customer takes a seat in a date that already exists.

This choice shapes everything afterwards, so it is worth getting right. It decides which pricing models you are offered, which questions the setup asks, what the booking page collects from your customer, and what stages a booking moves through.

Tip: You are not locked into one. A gym can sell class passes and hire out the studio. Each service picks its own shape.

The setup

The wizard walks the questions that matter for the shape you picked, then shows you a review before anything is saved. Roughly:

  • Details for every service: the name and description customers will see.
  • Pricing, in whichever models suit the shape.
  • Duration, for work booked to the clock.
  • Units, for hire, meaning which courts or vehicles this covers.
  • Hire style, for how the hire is measured.
  • Hours, where the thing has its own opening pattern.
  • Sessions, for classes: the dates people can book.
  • Staff, for who can deliver it.
  • Payment, for whether you are paid up front or afterwards.

Anything you skip can be set later. The service page has a section for each of these and you can come back to it whenever.

Editing a service

Open any service from the Services list. The page shows only the sections that apply to it, so a class editor does not offer you a call-out fee and a mowing service is not asked about seats.

Making a service bookable online

A service becomes bookable on your public page once it has enough information to offer a real time slot, which in practice means a duration and a price.

The exception is a quote-priced service. Those deliberately have no duration, because you do not know how long the job is until you have looked at it. Customers request a quote instead of booking a slot.

Removing a service

You can remove a service from its page. Bookables tells you first what removing it would affect, so you are not surprised by a hole in something that is already booked.

What is next

Next: Duration and pricing.
